Shear Genius….. meh….

By

It’s been said that a single picture is worth a thousand words.

Instead of writing some snarky comments, I’m going to post a single picture that completely sums up what I think and feel about this years season of Shear Genius.

bored-baby

When I watch an episode I find myself bored. Bored with the challenges, bored with the host (when I am not totally distracted by her accent), bored with the over the top, hair stylist.

In art, the worst reaction that someone viewing your art is indifference. That is exactly where I find myself watching the soulless, passionless show.

Meh…..

I haven't seen it. I do have to say that just because a person has a big name doesn't mean they are good at what they do. I have learned that fame and fortune have little to do with talent if you are a good self marketer. Walk the walk and be a good B.S'er and there are a lot of people that are there only for the money.

Maybe this is one of those instances?

I haven't seen it either but I felt the exact same way with last year's Split Ends. I think what happens is that they try to get more and more drama going but then lose the whole heart of the show in the meantime. The shows are not really made for hairdressers so they are just trying to show these awful drama queen stylists at their worse. (at least on Split Ends) So then it becomes just another stupid reality show.

I feel like I'm watching an hour long commercial for Nexus and SoCapUSA extensions! I think the work that most of the stylists do is wildly inconsistent, and sub-par in most cases. Don't get me started on Camilla's accent!!!

I only have local cable, so there are alot of shows I don't get to see which now sounds like a good thing.

Here is my question to Maven; what do you want to see? what is it that excites you in hair? perhaps you just need a really good vacation. After all you are in the top 2% already. What else is there?

What would I like to see?

Well, I'm not looking for expertise or mastery. I would just like to see some artistry, some craft, a point of view expressed through hair.

If you watch Top Chef, you can see the respect for the craft conveyed in everything that the contestants do, the slackers are quickly dismissed. In Shear Genius, which is modeled after Top Chef, it doesn't seem to click the same. Is the show "Orange County Housewives" DRAMA or is it a professional craft competition. You can't play both sides of the fence.

I will give them credit that they are given some actual time to do the challenges this year over previous years. But, the model selection is ludicrous. Why would you choose a model that won't let you do anything to their hair? They are a MODEL on a television show that is a hair competition! The simple fact that they have a single model that won't let the stylist do ANYTHING to their hair (I want it long, no layers and no bangs but you can do anything you want as long as it's down....) just goes to show that they are trying to play the 'pressure cooker' drama element card, only to have the 'judges' blame the stylist for not doing enough and talking the client into something more. Ugh.... And on a side note, Jonathan is just a douche', I know that the directors of the show want the judges to be like Simon of American Idol, but Simon at least has charisma and keeps his criticism short and sweet, not a drawn out dissertation. Most of the time he just states "not good enough".

I'm not watching Shear Genius to learn anything, I'm not watching for inspiration, I would like to watch from the perspective of seeing the creative process in action, which would be the easiest to deliver.

I have watched all three seasons and I have to tell you It seams the first year had the most talent. The rest are just omg I can't believe they have been doing hair for so long. Is it me or do I not care what a model says about hair. Anyways It would be nice to see a show with real talent. Oh But I do love the drama lol!

I just caught a glimpse the other night and you are so right about the host. That was the first thing that caught my attention and I even made an irritated comment to my husband about her poor English. Normally the accents don't bother me. I find some even fun to listen too but but for some reason this one hit a poor spot with me.

I caught the end, Tabbatha was ragging some girls butt who did a piss pour flat iron job. How can you mess up a flat iron? lol. She should have had that one in the bag.

I think the show is rediculous for many reasons. 1) Give them enough time and lets see some awesome work beingn presented. 2) Jonathan needs to give up the toupee and his undeserved attitude. 3) screen the stylists for talent and not for there drama rating! and many others... just too tired to type them all

I agree with everyone. Maven, well said, this season they've eliminated any "creative process in action" which is to the shows detriment and so counterproductive to what I loved about the show in past seasons. I have to say I did like how Brig stood up to Tabatha (who I usually like) in the last episode. Her model wouldn't let her do anything and what ARE you supposed to do in a situation like that??! Additionally, Jonathon's hairpiece-sooooo bad! and I have to seriously wonder if anyone actually heard Camilla speak before giving her that job??!

Last night I watched the episode where they were cutting curly hair dry into a graduated bob and the elimination challenge was doing 40's pin up styles for the soldiers wives.

I realized what I dislike about this season in comparison to previous seasons. It's the hairstylist. The only ones that I liked or could connect with were Adee and Amy. They are now both gone. April is coming across as a complete caricature of a typical full of themselves B.S. stylist and I'm quickly looking interest.

Drama is fine and entertaining as long as the characters have some charisma. This years stylist are just arrogant, cocky, uninteresting and they hair is lackluster. It also seems that as long as you can style hair you will do well. Being "Shear Genius" requires more than just being good at styling hair.

Oh yeah. All the graduated bobs were bad.... just bad.... Any one that says that a graduated bob is ugly is only saying that because they can't do one so they cop an attitude about it instead of admit their lack of skill.

I must say the last ep was tragic. The cutting was bad bad bad, and to have a guest judge from John Sahag, and then decide to do a "dry" haircut, come on that was just a joke. Then again maybe the whole thing is a joke and I am just not in on it!

Maven, I do believe that you have raised the graduated bob to a new level. I have gotten so that it is my favorite cut right now. (Has been for some time.) I do think that there are very few people that know how to do that cut properly, and I think that those that are on here are among those few as only those that strive for excellence really care about the results.

I think I am glad I don't get shear genius up here.

I wish they took the producers of Top Chef and Top Chef Masters and put them into shear genius. Those two shows make me want to be a chef, and it's not about the drama. It's about the food and presentation. Even Project Runway is better than SG and puts the focus on the contest rather than the drama, drama, drama!

Another show I like is from food network where they have 4 different cake designers each week make a cake based on a theme, and then they're judged. I think they could do something like that for hair stylists. It would be a stretch, but it could be done.

I'll tell you my very favorite reality challenge show is RuPaul's Drag Race on LOGO. This is the 2nd season-you can get the first one 'on demand' and it's well worth watching. But imo, this, as opposed to this season's Shear Genius, showcases some real talent. It covers it all-hair, make-up, fashion, creativity, comedy and of course-the drama! And RuPaul is pretty funny. But those queens take everything to the nth degree. For example, last week's challenge was they had to dress up as both a bride and a groom-it was great! I think the bottom line with this season's Shear Genius is imo, there's not one shear genius on that show-it's seriously disappointing and mediocre.

Ok - first re: Shear Genius- I think this year's talent was better than last years in that at least they are not playing it as safe as last years contestants- need I remind anyone of the Charlie's Angels challenge (how much fun should THAT have been, yet they ALL failed). Also the 'look like your dog' challenge was beyond boring- not one of them executed the challenge, everyone played it safe through the entire series.
I absolutely agree with Maven's statement:

"But, the model selection is ludicrous. Why would you choose a model that won't let you do anything to their hair? They are a MODEL on a television show that is a hair competition! The simple fact that they have a single model that won't let the stylist do ANYTHING to their hair (I want it long, no layers and no bangs but you can do anything you want as long as it's down....) just goes to show that they are trying to play the 'pressure cooker' drama element card, only to have the 'judges' blame the stylist for not doing enough and talking the client into something more." Jonathan and the other big names have a huge luxury in that they have clients who are going to them because they are famous and are willing to let them do whatever they want to them. This is not the reality of these contestants or most hairstylists. Jonathan in particular does not 'get it' that you can't talk some people into anything that you think they should have,or what could win you the challenge."

Also the whole 'pressure cooker' element takes so much away from the show- who cares how quickly you can turn out something unfinished and mediocre when it would be more interesting to see a stylist's array of skills when given an adequate time to finish and go over and beyond what they can do in 45 mins?

PS- WTF is going on with Orlando Pita's own head of hair? YUCK!

I think that the competition is confused...

Do they want actual SALON hairdressers doing salon work or do they want SESSION stylist doing STYLES and not cut and color. The general public may not see any difference but they are two totally different aspects of the industry. How many session stylist do you see at salon trade shows? Very few if any.

If the show is going to go after the session stylist segment then they have to give them MORE TIME to do the kind of work that will be visually impressive.

If they want salon cut and color type of work, then give them models that are open to getting their hair CHANGED, not models that don't want any length cut off, stay blonde and no layers or bangs! Ugh!!

I have to say that in the last show I was impressed with Brig's work and unimpressed with Jonathan's close mindedness (how are you going to style 6 models hair in 3 hours and do something that intricate!?).

BTW- I though Brig was way hot in that kinda crazy hot way!

I totally liked Brig! I found her style really different & interesting and I loved watching her and seeing what she came out with-including the clothes what she wore and and how she approached the challenges. And of course, even though it's not supposed to, in the end, it did boil down to a personality contest. I found Janine and Matthew to be arrogant and obnoxious. It wasn't about the hair for me in the end-I just wanted them not to win and I admit it! But imo, this season was inferior, from the host to the judges to the challenges to the contestants! Hopefully, they'll step it up next season.

I don't think the last challenge should have been what solely determined the winner. Brig didn't do great work throughout the season, so I I don't think she earned the title of 'Shear Genius'. Granted, I think she's very creative (yet annoying and a hot mess), but she kept running out of time and had lots of unfinished looks all season. To me her last challenge looked sloppy and ill-fitted to the heads of the models.

Matthew obviously didn't understand that the last challenge was about cohesiveness, (which he clearly didn't have) but I thought he had the best looks of any of them- in his own words he was trying to show a range of what he could do and I thought the dark-haired pony-tailed mohawk with the leather and zippers was amazingly executed. For him to have pulled off all those intricate styles in such a short amount of time was genius to me.

Why wasn't Henry Duarte (the designer) one of the judges at the end?????? THAT made NO sense to me whatsoever.

They so need to revamp the show. I noticed at the end of the credts it says the producers have the final say on contestants so there goes that theory. Blah!
